The region of Veracruz has a long and fascinating coffee history — it was the first region in mainland America to cultivate coffee, dating back to the 18th century when the first coffee plants arrived at the port of Veracruz and took root near Cordoba.
Although Veracruz once produced the majority of Mexico's coffee, it now contributes around a quarter of the country's total production. Yet its reputation for quality remains firmly intact, especially in areas like Huatusco.
The town of Huatusco, nestled in the Veracruz highlands, is one of Mexico's hidden gems for specialty coffee. Sitting at elevations between 1,200 and 1,800 metres, the region benefits from a unique microclimate of abundant rainfall, cool nights, and rich volcanic soils — ideal conditions for slow-growing, flavour-rich Arabica beans.
Coffees from Huatusco are celebrated for their refined acidity, balanced body, and layered flavour profiles, often featuring chocolate, nut, citrus, and stone fruit notes.
